“Since I work through the Internet my dream is to one day meet with my customers face to face.”
How did you begin designing jewelry?
I began handcrafting jewelry as a teenager, but once my children were grown I worked at turning my hobby into a profession. At first, I began making jewelry and charms for myself and gifting some of my designs to close friends. When my friends asked me to make jewelry that they could use as gifts I knew I had found a profession. ‘Chen Z. Designs’ is the company I formed and I limit the quantity of each new design. I don’t like producing mass creations, and I prefer the challenge that innovation and creativity brings me with each new jewelry piece I create.
Describe how a creative designer organizes her day.
I love to start my day with a cup of coffee while sitting in my garden and enjoying the flowers and plants around me. It sets the mood for me to think about new ideas and creations. Once I enter my studio, I spread my materials across my desktop and begin the aspect of putting my ideas together utilizing materials and colors. I feel so alive when I have finished a new design.
What makes your jewelry unique?
The vibrancy of colors, which I combine with high-quality leather cords and gold/silver plated metals is the unique look and effect I strive for. My customers like my use of trendy styles along with traditional Jewish symbols and charms. Many of my designs offer multiple options like my popular wrap bracelet which can also be worn as a long or shorter double wrapped necklace.
What would you want your customers to say about you?
The response that I take the most pride in receiving is when a customer writes me saying, “I so much like wearing your jewelry because it combines style with a Jewish theme.”
I am looking for a gift for my spouse, friend, or relative. What is the benefit of selecting something handcrafted?
In these modern times when almost everything we buy is mass produced, it is refreshing to look for and find something unique and different. This is the concept that motivates me in creating and hand crafting something special and yet affordable as a gift for someone that is loved and cared for.
How would you classify a true Israeli designer?
It would be difficult to stereotype a true Israeli designer. Israelis are very much interested and exposed to what is happening in our own country and around the world. This includes an awareness of what is happening in the world of fashion. I am very much influenced by the nature and natural colors I see around me. The colors of the sea, the sky, and the hills and beaches are reflected in the turquoise and camel leather colors I work with. I believe this is what gives an Israeli designer a special touch.
What would you like to do if a special opportunity pops up?
My family members know I have a dream. If I had the opportunity I would take a long journey in order to visit different designers and shop owners I have business relations with and also my customers. Since I work through the Internet my dream is to one day meet with my customers face to face. I know it seems like a fantasy, but a trip like this would enrich me a lot.
